Roulette in French means “small wheel”. The first Roulette Wheel was invented in 1655, by the French scientist Blaise Pascal. Pascal studied probability and was known for his works on that. At first, Roulette was played only in a monastery because monks wanted to spend their free time in an exciting way. Soon, Roulette entered a casino in Paris where it was thought as a game for the rich, elegant and intelligent. In 1842, Francois and Luis Blanc started the first casinos in Monte Carlo where, as the ‘legend’ says, they gave their souls to the devil and he told them the secret of roulette. The another devilish thing in Roulette are the numbers. The two men chose to use the numbers 0 to 36, whose sum, when we add them, is 666 – the number of the devil! Of course, we should not believe everything we hear, and these are the legends that might not have happened, but the game has always had a strange and supernatural aura. The first modern roulette wheel, with its black, red and green colors and odd/even numbers, was also used in a Parisian casino. Then, in the early 1800s, Roulette came to the USA. At first, generally those who earned money being lucky, patient and those who believed in magic played the game. Also Western miners and those interested in gold started to play the game and soon it became very popular in the United States, mainly in the west and during the Gold Rush. However, Americans changed a little the Roulette wheel and roulette history was changed forever. Americans added the two zeros “00” on the roulette wheel. European roulette wheels have very little house edge and the American casinos did not like that. They wanted to have bigger house edge, that is why they added the extra 00 pocket, and the American roulette wheel has now 31 pockets. So, if you want to have greater chances, always choose to play on a European wheel. Although both the 00 and 0 come from France, the double zero is known as the “American Wheel,” because American casinos liked it very much and it survived in the states. Meanwhile, the single zero was much more popular in Europe than the double zero and that is why it is called the “French Wheel.” Nowadays, every casino in the world offers the game of Roulette. Roulette is very popular because it is easy to play and exciting as you watch the ball spinning, because if it lands on the number you bet, you win 35 to 1! |
