1.Beginning You may not know about it but Bingo is rather old game which has its roots in Italy of about the year 1530. Consequently all further changes were possible only because of an evolution which began in Italy. In the 16th Century there was an Italian, national lottery game called `Lo Giuoco del Lotto D`Italia` which was extremely popular among all the citizens. However, the Catholic Church, with its outstanding power, was strongly against this practice. In 1778, the bingo-like lottery arrived in France. It quickly became one of the most popular games with the same enthusiasm from citizens as well as the same disapproval from the Church. What is also a very important thing by the 1800s, lotteries had conquered all Europe. It was the time when the classic version of `Lotto` involved a playing card divided into 3 horizontal lines and 9 vertical columns was so similar to 90 ball Bingo that we can have the real ancestor. What is even more similar, each row had 5 numbered and 4 blank squares in a random arrangement. The columns contained numbers from 1-10 (1st column), 11-20 (2nd column), and so on, up to 90; and, just like modern bingo, each card was unique. So, and then came the American times. 2. The period of American "Beano" and Edwin Lowe Bingo reached the United States in the 1920s and easily hit the market of gambling. However, it was called `Beano` because of using pinto or lima beans to mark their cards. That was the first and probably the most important version of modern bingo. Another important factor was the invention of special numbered discs which were randomly drawn from a cigar box which formed the `calling` aspect of the game later known as “Bingo”. In a very short period of time the game became local entertainment of the country and was absorbed by rural customs which got a real pleasure from the new possible way of playing with real money. Generally speaking this was the harmless game one could play. In 1929, a salesman from New York, Edwin Lowe was so deeply inspired by the game that he was playing almost every day. It is very difficult to assess when and where it did happen, but one day he mispronounced the word “Beano”, and shouted it out as `BINGO!!’. It was the beginning of the new game. Based on old rules “Bingo” became as fashionable as never before. Additional help of a math professor, Carl Leffler helped Lowe to create even more random cards so that only a single player could win each time. Eventually, over 6,000 unique cards instead of the original 24 were being in use. Finally the famous mathematician left his works, but all has been done perfectly! 3. The era of Modern Bingo The era of modern Bingo began in the 1940s – 1950s when its popularity all over the world was unquestionable. What brings something strange into the story, Lowe’s best business ended up being church fundraisers. Irony of life has no borders, hasn’t it? Finally, he even managed to build a customer base with over 10,000 bingo games a week in the country. Wow! To conclude, nowadays, Bingo can be found nearly everywhere in the United States as well as all over the world. I am not talking about small church parishes, or rural schools. What I am trying to highlight here is the fact that there are no longer any borders as far as the game is concerned. We, nowadays do not need a special occasion on which we would be able to learn the game from a master who is accidentally in our little town. In the new millennium of the Internet, there are the biggest Bingo sites and competitions since its beginning in Italy in 16th Century. Bingo is everywhere, acquired by young children, played in their teenage years, then as a way of spending leisure times after work up to entertainment for retires. Bingo business is worth thousands of millions of dollars, additionally with poker and backgammon, as a one family of games in the gambling world. Prizes have become more and more attractive because by using the Internet, the number of players is constantly rising. Why? Simply because the access to the Internet is wider day by day. It was a long distance since 1530, which Bingo have walked all over the world in order to become one of the most popular games in our civilization. According to last surveys, almost 90% of our adults society know the rules and have at least once played the game. Simply, nothing to add!
