Did you know that Backgammon has a really long history which touches even ancient times? The first game based on these rules was called "Senet" and came from ancient Egypt where it was played on a special wooden board with 3 X 10 squares. However we do not know anything about the rules of the game. Historians have some hypothesis claim that the game based on a movement and displacement of opposing pieces moving in opposite directions. This was controlled by the roll of dice (usually from bones). Many archeologist accepted the hypothesis about the game as a very distinctive and royal. Another game was the Roman's "Ludus Duodecim Scriptorum". What is more it was probably nothing more than a version of “Senet” with three rows of twelve "points," and was played with three six-sided dice. Furthermore, about the year of 500 AD one of the rows was dropped and later, the game changed its name into "tabula" (Latin for "table"). To add up something more, the Emperor Claudius was very keen on the game. Some historians claim that he had a game board attached to his chariot. During the 1st century AD the game came to England with yet another name "Tables" and the rules became more like those from 20th Century. Unexpectedly, it survived the middle ages as a kind of entertainment for the upper classes but soon afterwards it was banned for a time in England. The reason was obvious – this was a gambling! The name "Backgammon" firstly appeared in 1645 and all scientists claim that the name came from the Middle English word "gam" meaning "game" and "back". To explain it in other words it meant, "the game where you can go back." In 1743 Edmund Hoyle was the first person who came out with the first official rules of backgammon. Then, in 1920 the doubling cube was the game which incredibly hard hit New-Yorkers. Since then we can hardly observe any changes in the rules of the game. Of course, there is something like its virtual face now because what we can observe in the Internet is something completely different from a visual point of view, but the rules stay untouched. Although computers have a strong influence on the game, still backgammon today is based on the same. To sum up, the popularity of this game is still increasing, so we have big competitions in the United States and Europe. |
